The SWAG Story
Vision:

A sustainable and healthy town of Weston, with engaged citizens committed to a thriving community, today and in the future.

Mission:

To amplify discussion and inspire effective action on sustainability issues in the town of Weston,we:

  • Focus on awareness and education
  • Lead community-based, pragmatic actions and collaborations
  • Encourage and support municipal, business, and residential cooperation
Our Story:

The Town of Weston values its natural resources and rural character. Townwide conservation groups have successfully protected acres of forest and trails, honoring Weston’s agricultural heritage. However, ongoing sustainability planning in the areas of energy, water, waste, and development has not been a priority of any particular entity.

In 2018, a group of concerned citizens created the Sustainable Weston Action Group (SWAG) to help educate and engage residents on local sustainability issues. One of SWAG’s first actions was to advocate for a new Town Sustainability Committee. This Committee, formed in the fall of 2018, is charged with ensuring sustainability issues and opportunities in Weston are proactively managed.

To date, SWAG has:
  • Campaigned to increase awareness of Weston’s gas leaks through an independent audit
  • Organized six annual Town-Wide Clean Ups
  • Worked with the Sustainability Committee to bring Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) to Weston
  • Helped establish the WPPA to address pollinator and habitat concerns
  • Supported Town efforts to encourage residents to compost and reduce waste
  • Provided input to Weston’s Climate Action Toolkit for Homeowners and Climate Action and Resilience Plan
  • Engaged and educated residents by publishing articles and hosting presentations, films and other public events
  • Collaborated with Town officials, departments, schools and other organizations on sustainability issues
SWAG is a chapter of Massachusetts Climate Action Network
